Race Rules
Conditions of entry
The following rules apply to all segments of the Gloucester TriChallenge race.
For additional rules relating to specific legs RIDE – PADDLE – RUN see below

Course marshals shall have authority to disqualify participants.

Medical authorities shall have ULTIMATE and FINAL authority to remove a participant from the race if the participant is judged to be physically incapable of continuing the race without the risk of serious injury or death. Medical transportation of any participant will result in automatic disqualification.

No stimulants, depressants or other substances with the intent to improve performance, eliminate the sense of fatigue or for any other purpose.

Good sportsmanlike conduct will be demanded of all contestants. Fraud, theft and acts of grossly unsportsmanlike conduct are grounds for immediate disqualification.

If a contestant decides to withdraw from the race at any time, it is the responsibility of the contestant to notify a Race Marshall or Official. It is essential that race officials know where contestants are on the course at all times.

Any appliance prescribed for a contestant by a medical practitioner must be approved by the Medical Director before it can be used in the event. Failure to gain approval will result in immediate DISQUALIFICATION.

Competitors must be over 12 years old on the day of the race. Competitors under 18 years must have written permission from parent or guardian. Proof of age may be required.

Note that Waiver forms are required to be completed and agreed to when entering. They are: Medical Questionaire, Individual Waiver and Team Waiver – these will be available when completing your entry form and entries cannot be finalised until this is completed.
The Rules Enforcement Committee will consist of a chief judge and two referees who will review each protest and whose ruling will be FINAL. Each race section will be under the control of a manager (Paddle, Cycle. Run).
Race Officials citing any contestant will inform the section Manager as soon as possible by providing the cited contestants number and reason for citation. The official is under no obligation to inform the contestant of the citation. The section Manager will inform the Race Director at race headquarters of the cited contestant’s completion of the section event, or within 30min of the cited contestant finishing the complete event.

The Race Director will then post the number/s of the cited contestant/s on a display board and record the citation and related details on a citation list. It is the responsibility of the contestant to monitor the citation display board and lodge a written appeal/protest within 30 minutes of his/hers finishing time of the posting of notice of citation.

At no time will a public announcement be made regarding cited contestants.

MTNB Leg
- It is a condition of entry that all competitors must wear the approved competitor’s numbers, which must be visible at all times.
- This triathlon recognizes states-of-the-art in the use of equipment and materials; however the Race Director may restrict equipment or materials if there is a safety issue.
- Each participant must wear race numbers at all times whilst on the course. Number must be attached to the bike for the duration of the event. Failure to wear race number is STRICTLY PROHIBITED may result in disqualification.
- Approved SAFETY STANDARD cycling helmets are required during the entire bike race. Any contestant seen riding without an approved SAFETY STANDARD helmet will be immediately disqualified. Leather or vinyl helmets will NOT be allowed. Helmet straps must be firmly secured.
- FRIENDS, FAMILY, ETC MAY NOT DRIVE AND MAY NOT BIKE ALONGSIDE CONTESTANT AND FOOD OR OTHER ITEMS MAY NOT BE PASSED TO CONTESTANTS. It is incumbent upon each contestant to immediately reject any attempt to assist, follow or escort.
- Each participant will be INDIVIDUALLY RESPONSIBLE for repair and maintenance of own bike. Assistance by anyone will be grounds for immediate disqualification. This necessarily disallows the use of spare wheels, backup bikes, and requires that each participant be prepared to handle any possible mechanical malfunction.
- Riders are required to heed directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.
- Participants may walk bikes if necessary.
- Riders are individually responsible for following traffic laws and are solely responsible for the consequences of any infractions.
- Race officials have the right to reject any bike considered not to meet minimum safety requirements. Race officials will make final judgment as to soundness of bikes. If bike does not meet safety standards, contestant will be required to correct problem before participating in race.
- The MTNB course will be closed 3hrs after start of the event. Riders still on course after 11.30am will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue and will be removed from the course.
- The rider must complete the entire stage of the Bike leg on the one bicycle.
- Food or drink may be carried by the competitor or made available at designated food stations.
- Glass containers of any description ARE NOT allowed to be carried or handed to competitors during competition.
- Competitors riding bikes have right of way over competitors pushing bikes.
- Short cutting the course will result in disqualification.
- Footwear must be fully enclosed.
- Bikes must be fitted with at least one front brake AND one rear brake in full working order.

Paddle Leg
- Race officials have the right to reject any kayak considered not to meet the minimum safety standards. NO DOUBLES ALLOWED IN SINGLES CATEGORY.
- Irrespective of whatever type of individual craft is used. It is compulsory that end loops must be attached.
- First kayak at rapids has right of way.
- It is forbidden to receive outside help during a race (subject to Kayak Rule 13), to be accompanied by other boats along the course or by throwing objects in the course.
- Taking pace or receiving assistance from boats in the race or by any other means is not permitted.
- When a kayak is overtaking another Kayak in the race, it is the duty of the overtaking craft to keep clear at all times of the boat being overtaken. On the other hand, the craft being overtaken is not allowed to alter its course to make difficulties for the overtaking craft.
- Contestants may walk the rapids if necessary.
- Adequate footwear must be worn at all times throughout the duration of the kayak leg.
- Wetsuits may be worn, together with any other clothing considered necessary for warmth.
- A buoyancy vest complying with the appropriate Australian Standard and approved helmet must be worn throughout the duration of the kayak leg.
- Not withstanding these accessories, the individuals number must be visible at all times.
- At transition areas, contestants are responsible for the suitable storage of equipment and clothing etc which has been used on the preceding leg and similarly, those items to be used for the ensuing leg. Numbered bags will be provided for this purpose.
- Competitors are allowed one person only to assist in the launching of kayaks.
- The paddle course will be closed at 2pm and competitors still on the river at 2pm will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue in the event.

Trail Run Leg
- No form of locomotion other than running or walking is allowed.
- Runners must display a race number at all times on the course. Intentional alteration of any kind or failure to wear race number is STRICTLY PROHIBITED and may result in disqualification. The race number must be placed on the competitor’s front where it is clearly visible, or as determined by the Triathlon Organising Committee.
- No Individual support vehicles or non-participant escort runners are allowed. Teamwork as a result of outside assistance which provides an advantage over single competitors is not allowed. FRIENDS, FAMILY MEMBERS/ ETC MAY NOT RUN, BIKE, OR DRIVE ALONGSIDE RUNNERS AND FOOD OR OTHER ITEMS MAY NOT BE PASSED TO RUNNERS BY NON PARTICIPANTS. It is incumbent upon each competitor to immediately reject any attempt to assist, follow or escort. It IS permissible for contestants who are still competing to run with other contestants who are still competing.
- Runners are required to follow the directions and instructions of all race authorities and public officials.
- The trail run course will be closed 6hrs after the start of the race. Any contestant still on the course after 3pm will be disqualified and will not be permitted to continue and will be removed from the course.
- Runners must run within the designated course.

Protest Procedure
Any contestant desiring to lodge a protest against any decision of the race administration or the conduct of any competitor(s) must file a written protest with the Race Director within 30min of completing or withdrawing from the race, and any protest must be accompanied by a $50 protest lodgment fee.

The Rule Enforcement Committee will review each protest and their ruling will be FINAL. Loss of protest claim will result in the forfeiture of $50 protest lodgement fee. If the competitor’s location on the course prevents a written protest, a verbal protest may be lodged to any race official who will inform the Race Director as soon as possible. The competitor lodging a verbal protest will make every effort to present a written protest to the Race Director without delay. If injury requiring treatment or hospitalization prevents a competitor from lodging a protest within the allocated time limit, then a protest will be accepted as the soonest possible time.
