BACK STORY

The inaugural Gloucester Mountain Man Triathlon was held in 1991. It attracted 117 competitors, both male and female, from as far away as Queensland and southern NSW.

The event was billed as “the triathlon with a difference” offering a 22 km mountain bike ride, 11 km kayak paddle down the picturesque and challenging Barrington River and a 10 km run back into Gloucester.

Due to the different nature of the course and the unqualified success of the event it immediately became a permanent fixture of the Australian Triathlon Calendar.

Experienced traditional athletes however, are expected to continue to enjoy the challenging format and, as in the past, continue to vote it as the best organised and medically equipped event in which they compete.

This major event continues to grow in size and stature. The maximum number of competitors is limited to 400 for safety reasons.

The Tri Challenge has major support from the local community, with SES, Rural Fire Brigades, all Service Clubs, High School students and many others who assist with the smooth running and marshalling on the day. We normally have in excess of 250 volunteers who give a whole day, and sometimes a whole weekend of their time to assist.
